These two get compared constantly and they are not really competitors. Speechify is a reading application for people who want text read to them. ElevenLabs is a voice-synthesis platform for people who want to produce audio for someone else. Choosing between them is mostly a question of which of those two jobs you have.

What each one is
Speechify
A consumption product. It lives in a browser extension, a mobile app, and a web reader, and its job is to read whatever is in front of you — a web page, an email, a PDF on your phone. The design centres on listening speed, cross-device sync, and getting through material you would otherwise have to sit and read.
Best for: Individuals who read a lot and want to convert that reading time into listening time, especially on mobile.
ElevenLabs
A production platform. It centres on an API, a studio interface, voice cloning, and dubbing. The output is a file or a stream you do something else with — publish it, ship it in a product, put it in a video. Voice quality is the headline, and it is genuinely at the front of the field.
Best for: Developers and creators producing audio for an audience: audiobooks, video narration, in-product speech.

The short answer
If you want something read to you, Speechify. If you want to produce audio for other people, ElevenLabs. The comparison only gets genuinely difficult in one case: you are a team that needs to produce audio for a defined group of people on a fixed budget. Speechify's per-person model does not fit a production workflow, and ElevenLabs' credit model does not fit a fixed budget. That gap is real, and it is where tools built for institutions sit.
Questions about Speechify and ElevenLabs
Is ElevenLabs better than Speechify?
For voice quality on generated audio, most listeners prefer ElevenLabs. But that is not the axis most people are actually choosing on — Speechify does something ElevenLabs does not attempt, which is read your own screen to you across your devices. A better-sounding voice does not help if the product does not do the job you have.
Can I use ElevenLabs to read PDFs like Speechify?
Not as a built-in reading experience. ElevenLabs has published a reader app, but the platform's centre of gravity is generation rather than consumption. If reading your own documents on the go is the job, Speechify or a document-conversion tool is a closer fit.
Which is cheaper?
They are not comparable on price because the units differ — one sells seats, the other sells characters. For steady personal reading, a Speechify subscription is usually the lower and more predictable cost. For occasional generation, ElevenLabs credits can be far cheaper. For high steady volume, credits get expensive.
Can I use ElevenLabs voices commercially?
Commercial usage rights depend on the plan, and both vendors change these terms. Check the current terms on their own site rather than trusting any comparison page, including this one.

That last case is the one we built for. NaturalTTS uses ElevenLabs for its premium engine, so the voice quality is the same, but it is packaged as a flat plan with document upload, a shared team workspace, and the procurement paperwork a school or university needs. If you are an individual reader, Speechify is a better fit than we are. If you are a developer, go direct to ElevenLabs.
